Until Sunday, 11 October, Ocean Space hosts the exhibition Tide of Returns commissioned and produced by TBA21–Academy and centered on the artistic research of Repatriates Collective, a collective of artists from northern Australia, Southern and West Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
Curated by Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll, the exhibition stems from the many small rituals that embody ecological knowledge and care practices among the artists. The works on display tell the stories of communities, their practices, their ancestors, and their kinship ties.
The two naves of the former Church of San Lorenzo house specially commissioned multimedia works. From My Mother’s Country by Repatriates Collective welcomes visitors into an immersive installation combining sand, thousands of dolls made from shells and textiles, video, and sound.
In the eastern nave, Weaving Connections, a textile and video installation by Verena Melgarejo Weinandt, traces gestures of care, belonging, and collective healing. The space is filled with woven textiles in shades of blue, crossed by black braids that evoke the flow of water as well as strands of hair. Integrated into the textile landscape, a three-channel video follows a performance involving the preparation, weaving, and washing of textiles in a river.
