New Current – Achille Guzzardella. Homage to Renato Birolli presents a selection of paintings and sculptures by Achille Guzzardella, bringing his contemporary artistic research into dialogue with the history and experience of the Corrente group.
The project pays particular tribute to Renato Birolli (1905–1959), an artist born in Verona and later based in Milan, whose ideas on colour, gesture and matter provide an important reference for Guzzardella’s work.
Alongside paintings from the Corrente 2026 series, the exhibition presents works from the Fantasmi series and other paintings characterized by a strong expressionist, chromatic and material quality. The exhibition also features the sculptural portrait of Rosa Birolli, Renato Birolli’s wife, created by Guzzardella in 1995.
The project stems from the artist’s relationship with the cultural environment of Corrente and with important figures of Italian art and culture. It reflects on the relationship between tradition and contemporary art and on the ability of art to reinterpret themes and languages of the past in the present.
The exhibition is curated by Valentina Motta, in collaboration with Nuova CORRENTE, and hosted by Galleria Aperta Liceo Artistico “Nani-Boccioni” of Verona, curated by Prof. Massimo Girelli.`
