Positioning oneself in the present is an aspiration that involves exploring a formal and moral tension which runs through contemporary artistic practice, yielding widely varying outcomes.

Following a divergent, dense, raw path, free from commercial filters, Sottogiudecca explicitly positions itself as a bastion of the contemporary, welcoming both settled and transient perspectives.

‘Geographies of the Margin: Roots in Transit’ is a “deliberately anarchic and anachronistic mapping” of contemporary artists – not categorised as emerging, established or outsiders – who, in recent years, have crossed paths with the gallery and left their mark.

The exhibition offers a fragmented and heterogeneous panorama that reflects diverse human and professional trajectories, punctuated by departures, stays, exiles, escapes, abandonments and returns, within the eternal conflict between the visual saturation of large cities and the opalescent filter of the provinces.

The conceptual centre of gravity of this mapping is the focus on the experience of the Nuova Scuola di Scilla as a contemporary critical device: the margin is not merely a boundary but a radical vantage point.
