The painting “Mare Nostrum – Notturno” (oil on canvas, 107×107, 2005) reproduced here fits well within the theme chosen for the 22nd Contemporary Art Day, “Geographies of Contemporaneity,” offering a visual reflection on the relationship between humanity and the sea, understood as a space of life, transformation, and mystery. Seemingly figurative, the work represents the Mediterranean, “Mare Nostrum”; a sea that has witnessed and continues to witness the journeys, dreams, and challenges of generations of people. The figures who inhabit it are bearers of hope and a sense of belonging, but also vulnerable to the perils of this sea, which at times reveals itself to be a place of danger and confusion.
On the horizon, the silhouettes of Portovenere and the small islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto loom: places dear to the artist, almost “places of the soul,” representing the refuge and starting point for those who, sailing these waters, find moments of peace and protection from the tumult of the open sea, with all its power and unpredictability.
The moon, which dominates the entire scene, symbolizes a benevolent and reassuring presence, offering light and comfort during the night hours.
Contemporary Art Day is a special opportunity to explore and learn more about the work and artistic journey of Francesco Vaccarone (1940–2024) by visiting the atelier where the artist worked for 40 years, until his passing in 2024. This choice reflects and engages with his work. Here, it will be possible to visit his workplace, admire the engraving workshop, and see his recent production. Through this initiative, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in his creative world.
The event also offers the opportunity to meet with members of the Association, encouraging an exchange of opinions and reflections on Francesco Vaccarone’s art. It will be a time for discussion and in-depth analysis, providing updates on upcoming events dedicated to the artist.
An unmissable event for contemporary art enthusiasts and those wishing to pay homage to a key figure in the Italian art scene.
