The GAMeC CentroArteModerna in Pisa (Lungarno Mediceo 26) presents a special exhibition dedicated to Nilvano Sbrana (1932–2016), a figure deeply connected to the city and to its human and cultural history. The exhibition marks the tenth anniversary of his passing and unfolds as a collective narrative: not only through documents, photographs and archival materials, but above all through the works of the artists who knew him, appreciated him, and accompanied him throughout his life.
Nilvano Sbrana was born in Pisa in 1932. His life spanned decades of transformation in the city, from the post‑war period to modernisation, while maintaining a profound bond with the human and social fabric of the territory. A figure not always discreet, yet concrete and generous, Nilvano embodied that Pisa made of people who build, repair, support, without ever seeking visibility for its own sake. Many artists remember his strong yet essential presence, his great availability, his ability simply to be there. Nilvano Sbrana passed away on 12 October 2016.
The exhibition is part of the celebrations for the gallery’s 50th anniversary, a milestone that confirms the role of GAMeC CentroArteModerna in Pisa as one of the city’s most significant private cultural landmarks — a place of encounter, exchange and growth for generations of artists, curators and art enthusiasts. In this context, the presence of the invited artists takes on a special meaning: it is a testimony of friendship, closeness and gratitude towards an institution that has supported and promoted artistic creativity in Pisa and beyond.
Conceived, curated and installed by Massimiliano Sbrana, son of the founders (Nilvano Sbrana and Fernanda Taccola), the exhibition traces a path capable of restoring the most authentic and everyday dimension of Nilvano, intertwining family memory, the city’s history and artistic contributions.
“Nilvano Sbrana. A Pisan Story” is an exhibition that speaks of affection, work and everyday dignity. A discreet and authentic tribute, built with the same impulse that always characterised his way of being in the world, and which today intertwines with the long and vital history of GAMeC CentroArteModerna in Pisa, in its fiftieth year of activity.
