To mark the twenty-second Giornata del Contemporaneo organised by AMACI, the National Pavilion of the United Republic of Tanzania presents the latest instalment in its Special Events programme – Diary #12: Dark Balance, a solo exhibition by Anastasia Giuntoli-Starovoitova, curated by Martina Cavallarin, with curatorial assistance from Camilla Ballesto.

The opening on Saturday 10 October at 6.30 pm will be preceded by a guided tour of the National Pavilion with the curator and the artist, focusing on Giuntoli-Starovoitova’s installation, followed by the opening of the solo exhibition.

Giuntoli-Starovoitova’s practice revolves around the relationship, exchange and conflict between energy and matter, order and unpredictability, light and darkness. Elements which, through their mutual transformation, continually alter the overall balance.
Another fundamental aspect of her artistic practice concerns the relationship between the artwork and the viewer. The arrangement of the canvases may also be altered, allowing the public to influence the spatial configuration of the exhibition. Therefore, the artwork is not regarded as a completely finished form, but rather as part of an open-ended process, in line with the “Art Coefficient” theorised by Marcel Duchamp. The sequence of paintings, installed in a series of different formats, becomes a hub of relationships, in which art, environment and audience all contribute to the construction of the experience and to the definition of new perspectives.

As part of Minor Frequencies, Dark Balance helps to develop a reflection which, starting from painting, opens up to universal themes. The exhibition does not aim to offer a definitive solution to the tension between forces, but invites the public to engage with their coexistence. And balance is not a point of arrival; it is a tension in constant flux.

The event reaffirms the mission of the Special Events – Diary series to keep the Pavilion alive and open to dialogue, creating new opportunities for encounters between artists, curators, the public and the Biennale’s international community.
