Geographies of the Contemporary A New Humanity by Michele di Erre
If the present is a space undergoing constant transformation, in which territories, communities and identities are defined through relationships, conflicts and exchanges, the question remains: which is the oldest and least discussed of the boundaries we are redefining? Alongside the boundaries between states, cultures and affiliations, there is one that Western culture has taken for granted for centuries: that between the human and the non-human, between the observer and the observed.
*A New Humanity* by Michele di Erre, the series from the Primate Collection, brings this boundary into the map of contemporary geographies. The primate’s face, portrayed in black and white and stripped of its exotic backdrop, shows that even the line between ‘us’ and ‘them’ is a cultural and historical construct, open to renegotiation, just like all the others.
