On the occasion of the Twenty-Second Giornata del Contemporaneo, Rossocinabro is pleased to present the exhibition Superfici di Sovrapposizione across the dual, simultaneous settings of Florence and Rome. The initiative sits at the very heart of current artistic debate, offering an open yet rigorous reflection on the concept of “geography”—a notion that transcends the simple topographical representation of places to become a dynamic space of encounter where matter, visual perception, and the stratification of memory converge.

The title itself, Superfici di Sovrapposizione (“Overlapping Surfaces”), directs the gaze toward the very nature of the artistic medium. The canvas or photographic paper ceases to be a mere passive recipient, transforming instead into a true terrain of negotiation and dialogue. The surface thus becomes a threshold where objective reality weaves together with inner reinterpretation. Each work functions as a temporal palimpsest: images and traces do not erase one another, but accumulate layer by layer, turning the painterly gesture and the photographic shot into levels of understanding that viewers are invited to reconstruct through their own gaze.

The conceptual core of the exhibition lies in the media cross-talk between photographic language and painterly practice. Far from being opposing or autonomous codes, the lens and the brush work side by side in a process of mutual integration. Photography is tasked with anchoring the work in reality, while painting steps in to resurface and deconstruct that very image. The brush does not deny the photograph, but rather expands its timeframe of engagement, turning a frozen instant into an enduring inner experience.

Through this continuous exchange between media, the exhibition charts a multifaceted map of our present day. The artworks span from figurative landscapes to pure abstraction, and from intimate portraiture to explorations of enduring and ephemeral forms. Consequently, the landscape sheds its purely descriptive function to become a projection of inner states or raw geometric structure, while the human figure becomes a point of convergence between individual identity and collective memory.

Unfolding simultaneously across Rome and Florence, Superfici di Sovrapposizione ultimately serves as a visual framework capable of reshaping how we perceive reality. Working hand in hand, the camera lens and the paintbrush do not merely seek to illustrate the world—they plot new visual coordinates, revealing the deep, complex, and layered fabric of our lived experience.
