The event Are Museums Undergoing an Ecological Turn?, curated by NERO and EECLECTIC and hosted at MISS READ: The Berlin Art Book Fair & Festival in Berlin, reflects on how museums are responding to the climate crisis, examining their potential to address sustainability, conservation and the long-term survival of the planet.
Inspired by the volume Museums at the Ecological Turn (AMACI & NERO, 2024), the event — featuring contributions from Lorenzo Balbi, Katharina Köhle, Jumana Manna, Janine Sack and Franciska Zólyom — sets out to consider how museums can act as ethical agents in the face of ecological collapse, in particular through the work of Jumana Manna, whose artistic practice highlights the complex relationship between ecology and politics, critiquing extractivism and colonial conservation practices.
A second central theme of the discussion will be the exhibition and publication Things That Were Are Things Again (EECLECTIC, 2025), an experimental attempt by Leipzig’s GfZK (Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst) to curate a climate-neutral collections exhibition — developed in collaboration with artists and designers to implement circular strategies, reduce energy consumption and rethink the use of resources.
Through these perspectives, the event aims to reflect on the potential of museums to promote ecological awareness, social transformation and sustainable futures.
