In 1845, Henry David Thoreau actually did it. He withdrew to the shores of Walden Pond, choosing to live away from society’s conventions and its relentless need to possess. It was not simply an escape, but an experiment: a way of questioning what is truly necessary, our relationship with nature, with time, and with the possibility of living more consciously.
Almost two centuries later, the world is still immersed in constant crises, endless notifications, overexposure, consumption and acceleration. We are constantly connected and, perhaps, increasingly distant from what surrounds us.
So, what might caring mean today?
Perhaps we do not need to go into the woods. Perhaps the act of resistance is learning to stop. To reclaim our attention. To listen. To restore value to relationships, to places, to time, to the body, to memory. To what we normally pass through without seeing.
Care can be both a small and a radical choice: to step away from speed in order to look again.
The works in this exhibition emerge from this question. They do not offer answers, but open spaces for reflection on fragility and resistance, on the environment and relationships, on memory and the possibility of creating new forms of proximity.
Because perhaps, today, caring also means this: learning to inhabit the world again, rather than simply passing through it.
