On the occasion of the Twenty-Second Giornata del Contemporaneo, Rossocinabro Gallery presents the exhibition Superfici di Sovrapposizione (Overlapping Surfaces), held simultaneously across the dual settings of Florence and Rome. The initiative situates itself at the center of the current artistic debate by proposing an open yet rigorous reflection on the concept of “geography”—an idea that goes beyond the simple topographical representation of places to transform into a dynamic space of encounter, where matter, visual perception, and the stratification of memory converge.
The title itself, Superfici di Sovrapposizione, directs the viewer’s gaze toward the nature of the artistic medium. Each work functions as a temporal palimpsest: images and traces do not cancel one another out, but rather accumulate in layers, turning both the painterly gesture and the photographic shot into cognitive levels that viewers are invited to reconstruct through their own perception.
The conceptual core of the exhibition lies in the media short-circuit between the language of photography and the practice of painting. Far from being considered antithetical or autonomous codes, the lens and the brush stand side by side in a process of mutual integration. Photography is tasked with anchoring the work to reality: the camera isolates minimal details, captures imperceptible moments, and documents traces of what changes or risks fading away, acting as a tool for extracting form from the fluid temporality of daily life. Painting, for its part, intervenes to surface and deconstruct that very image: through the density of matter, the vibration of color, and the three-dimensionality of the gesture, painting restores a bodily and emotional dimension. The brush does not deny photography; rather, it expands its time of engagement, transforming the snapshot’s frozen instant into an inner duration.
Through this continuous exchange between media, the exhibition charts a composite map of our present day.
Set simultaneously across Rome and Florence, Superfici di Sovrapposizione ultimately functions as a visual device capable of redefining our perception of reality—tracing new coordinates for our gaze and revealing the deep, complex, and layered fabric of our lived experience.
