Three years after the exhibition The Great Italian Vision, organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), a new selection of works from the Farnesina Collection—one of the most important collections of contemporary Italian art—is being presented as part of Identity Beyond Borders. A Dialogue Between Human Beings and Nature in the Works of the Farnesina Collection. The new exhibition, carefully curated by Benedetta Carpi De Resmini, arrives in Tokyo following presentations in Berlin, Vilnius, Valletta, Belgrade, and Paris.
The exhibition is divided into three sections—Roots of Resistance, Geographies of Detachment, and Unstable Ecologies—which bring together a rich array of voices, almost entirely female, reflecting on the theme of identity in a present marked by ecological crises, migration, geopolitical instability, and profound cultural transformations.
As a tribute to the host country, the selection seeks to highlight new perspectives, bringing to the fore the profound connections that numerous Italian women artists have established with Japanese aesthetics, thought, and culture. In this context, the exhibition is enriched by new connections, in which the concept of the border shifts from a geographical boundary to a space of encounter.
The range of artistic media has also been further expanded: alongside graphic arts, video installations, and photography, the exhibition ventures into poetry and includes installations created specifically for this edition.
