To mark AMACI’s 22nd Contemporary Art Day, the unique work by Giovanni Bonanno titled *Dopo tutto, il giorno e la notte* (After All, Day and Night)—a digital piece with variable dimensions created in 2026 and held in the Bongiani Art Museum collection in Salerno—is being presented on Unique Space.
Giovanni Bonanno (alias Sandro Bongiani) was born in 1954 in Sicily, in the Valley of the Temples, between Selinunte and Agrigento. Long interested in “Integral Naturalism,” Bonanno has consistently worked at the boundaries of disciplines, engaging in a fruitful and inspired poetic cross-pollination centered on the design-oriented and utopian concepts previously pioneered in Como by significant artists such as Antonio Sant’Elia, Francesco Somaini, and Ico Parisi. A tenured Art History teacher, he lived in the province of Como from 1977 to 2002 and currently lives and works in Salerno. Since 1976, the artist has participated in numerous international solo and group exhibitions at significant events around the world.
Following an initial phase of work, he began defining his environmental-focused research in 1976; from 1976 to 1978, he worked on the expansion of active matter through drawings, projects, sculptures, and spatial installations. From 1979 to 1982, he produced a series of works exploring mental pathways, traces, and the artifacts of memory. In 1980, he began moving toward “Integral Naturalism,” and from 1983 to 1987, he created a series of works addressing altered nature and contaminants. From 1988 to 2006, a series of works explored the “non-objective” condition, where subtle anxieties and a creeping malaise—veiled in silence—generated a new vision, transforming the observed into a non-objective, visionary realm. The result was an accumulation of fragmented, scattered images defining a system that continuously disintegrates and reassembles; it was an elusive interplay of figures drifting through a state of transience that ultimately arrived at the silence of absence. This transience proliferated and accumulated in associative chains that were constantly contradicted, carving out a space and a sense of representation. From 2008 to the present, a new series of works has focused on the “Post-Human” condition.

“Unique Space” is an interactive gallery project honoring the brilliant Neapolitan gallerist Lucio Amelio. In 1988, Amelio established the “Pièce Unique” gallery at 4 Rue Jacques Callot in Paris, based on an original and unusual concept: each event showcased a single artwork in a space accessible to everyone—democratically—from the outside, day and night. Times have changed significantly since then; the internet has disrupted our lives, profoundly altering our habits. Consequently, in 2021, we decided to innovate this concept by creating “Unique Space”—an interactive gallery featuring a single artwork for an entire month, visible worldwide via the web from the comfort of one’s own home.
