“A tiny, tiny place” is a triptych of works on paper by the young visual artist Ioana Calin.
This sequence of interiors bears witness to the journeys and relocations across various places that the artist has experienced in her young life; through her artistic practice, these locations take on the character of intimate memories.
The choice of color and the technique employed emphasize the emotional and identity-related aspects of the work.
“A tiny, tiny place” symbolizes a place of the soul—a part of us that will forever live on in the places we have inhabited, and vice versa.
The curator notes: “The themes of quiet introspection and intimacy struck a deep chord with me.
They brought to mind the Japanese appreciation for spaces that are spare yet imbued with poetry.
*Ma* (間) is the aesthetic philosophy of the ‘void’ or negative space. It is the concept of valuing essential space and the pauses between objects. In the Japanese view, the less cluttered a space is, the more value and harmony it acquires.”
