An invitation to visitors to leave a photographic trace of their visit

DEDEM photo booths in AMACI Museums

On 10 December 1962, Dedem – the company that manufactures its booths in Ariccia and runs photo booths across the whole of Italy – installed its first booth in the Galleria Colonna in Rome. Ten years later, at his solo room in the Italian Pavilion of the 1972 Venice Biennale (its 36th edition), the Maestro Franco Vaccari elevated this “magic box” to the status of art, making it the protagonist of his Exhibition in Real Time No. 4, which invited visitors to leave a “photographic trace of their passage”, involving them in the creation of a photographic work that took shape in real time.

Since the installation of that first booth, Dedem’s “machines” have captured the faces of Italians for sixty years, recounting six decades of Italian history in images — with over 7 million photos printed each year and 3,500 photo booths across the country — recording and accompanying, through photography, changing customs, developments and transformations.

Today, to celebrate its first 60 years, Dedem is partnering with AMACI by joining the Businesses with Contemporary Art project, bringing its booths into some of the leading member museums and offering, within these spaces of thought and culture, not only a service but also ideas and inspiration. The first museums to install the booth will be GAM – Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin, GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Bergamo, and MACRO – Museo di Arte Contemporanea in Rome.
