800 years after the death of Francis of Assisi, in a time of wars, nuclear threats and authoritarian drifts, many pay lip service to his legacy. But “brother sun,” “sister moon,” “brother wind” and “our sister mother earth” are not liturgies to be quoted: they are a pact of universal brotherhood that is trampled upon today. Religion reduced to ideology oppresses and overturns Francis’s words; as an artist, I remain disgusted, not amazed.
For this reason, in the year of the 40th anniversary of my first solo exhibition, I join AMACI, opening my studio for free during the “Ottobrata Monticiana”, the autumn festival of the oldest district of Rome: small and ancient streets, historic shops and a community that comes together to celebrate the arrival of the season.
For over 40 years I have pursued a path outside of fashions and commerce, defending peace, human rights, diversity and integration against a patriarchal society that sacrifices the many for the interests of the few.
On October 10, with an exhibition and poetic performances, I transform the space into an act of creative resistance. Because as long as creatures sing together with nature, destruction will not have the last word.
