In the vastly long history of painting — its “childhood” — painting was a taken-for-granted gesture: no image-generating subject existed other than the human being. Today, however, there exists an ontologically distinct subject: generative artificial intelligence, capable of producing images with an efficiency, speed, and volume unreachable by any biological entity. This changes everything. Not painting in itself, but the awareness with which it is practiced.
Anyone who paints today can no longer do so out of unconscious inertia. They must know they are performing something specifically human, burdened in every gesture by their own biology, by limited time, by mortality. Every painterly gesture thus becomes deliberate: no longer taken for granted, but necessary, deeply identity-defining.
It is within this horizon that Testimoni Incarnati. L’umano come scelta (Embodied Witnesses: The Human as a Choice) is situated — the most extensive anthology to date by Jervé, Gustavo Alberto Palumbo, an Italian artist based in Spain, whose research focuses on the face and the human figure as philosophical and anthropological tools. Over sixty works cover forty years of activity: portraits, allegories, still lifes, vanitas, and conceptual works, brought together for the first time in a single venue.
Graduating in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1987, Jervé brings compositional discipline and an attention to space to his painting. Yet the human face is the core of his research: not merely an object of representation, but a sentient archive — the oldest in existence. Every individual holds an unrepeatable fragment of it; the portrait thus becomes the mirror through which humanity recognizes itself.
The allegorical core of the exhibition includes La Caduta di Lucifero (The Fall of Lucifer) and Christos Eirenopoios (The Peacemaker), opposed and connected by the “Line of Blood”: a tension between the forces that govern human existence, far removed from a purely devotional reading. The Reload series, by contrast, addresses art history as a living interlocutor: iconic works are revisited to the point of producing outcomes that are sometimes radically divergent from the originals. Neither quotation nor homage, but critical dialogue.
The Polaroids — portraits executed alla prima — transform the speed of the photographic shot into painterly matter, saving from digital oblivion images destined to be lost. Vanitas and Still Lifes complete the journey, bringing every image back to the essential question: what remains of a life lived and translated into material? Embodied Witnesses is Jervé’s answer: not a definitive response, but a testimony.
Presented in Genoa are numerous unpublished works, including the portrait of Giuseppe Miceli, a key figure in the construction of the Cretto di Gibellina. Exhibited alongside the work is a rare copy of Alberto Burri’s artist’s book Variazioni, one copy of which is held at MoMA, containing one of his famous white cretto.
