For the Twenty-Second Giornata del Contemporaneo, dedicated to ‘The Geographies of Contemporaneity’, a guided tour takes the public on a journey of discovery through the seven works in In Visita | Carol Rama, on loan from the Gallerie d’Italia – Intesa Sanpaolo Collections and a private collection, on display at Palazzo de’ Rossi | Collezioni del Novecento in Pistoia.
A journey through more than twenty years of artistic exploration by one of the most independent artists of the Italian twentieth century, from the early 1950s to the mid-1970s. Featuring some of the lesser-known works from her non-figurative output, the exhibition traces the continuous evolution of her artistic exploration within the realm of painting: from the linear, sign-based texture of abstraction – closely aligned with Turin’s Arte Concreta movement – to the introduction of everyday objects and materials into her informal-style paintings, such as the ‘Bricolages’, right through to the inner tubes and threads that trace new paths across the surface of the canvas.
It is an itinerary that also allows us to view Carol Rama’s work and the body – the explicit protagonist of her famous works from the 1930s and 1940s – from a different perspective. Whilst the body was then depicted in its physicality, in the provocative dimension of desire, in the works on display at Palazzo de’ Rossi it seems to be transformed into matter, trace and gesture: painting thus becomes a space traversed by signs, tensions and memories. A geography of painting constructed through displacements, accumulations, subtractions and transformations.
