FROM MATRIX TO ARTWORK: CONTEMPORARY ART PRINTMAKING
Casa Falconieri / Museo DART | October 10, 2026 – 22nd AMACI Contemporary Art Day
To mark the 22nd Contemporary Art Day, Casa Falconieri / Museo DART presents an event dedicated to contemporary art printmaking, held in conjunction with the exhibition I Luoghi del Segno (Places of the Mark) by Mimmo Paladino—an event that coincides with the exhibition’s closing.
It is an evening designed to immerse the audience in the world of printmaking through the firsthand experience of Gabriella Locci—artist and founder of Casa Falconieri—who will guide attendees through the journey from the matrix (printing plate) to the finished print.
Every stage of the process will be demonstrated live: from plate preparation and tool selection to inking and paper choice, culminating in the printing itself on a large intaglio press. The demonstration offers a unique opportunity to observe the interplay between gesture, material, technique, and artistic thought, revealing how a practice rooted in a long tradition remains a vibrant space for contemporary research and experimentation today.
Gabriella Locci boasts a significant international career, having developed her artistic practice through work with museums, galleries, and major events dedicated to contemporary art and fine art prints. Her activities include collaborations with the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao, speaking engagements at the Conservation and Restoration Days at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, and participation in international events such as ARCOmadrid, ARCO Lisboa, and ArtsLibris at the MACBA in Barcelona.
The event will feature a conversation with Maria Dolores Picciau, an art historian and author of numerous publications who has long been dedicated to the research and promotion of contemporary art on both national and international levels. This initiative aims to restore to fine art printmaking its status as a living language, capable of bridging the legacy of historical techniques with the freedom of contemporary artistic inquiry. It is an experience open to the public, offering insight not only into the final result but—above all—into the creative process: the time, materials, gestures, and transformations that turn every print into a work of art.
An evening dedicated to the contemporary through the art of printmaking: from matrix to image, from gesture to vision.
