On the occasion of Giornata del Contemporaneo on Saturday 10 October, visitors can view Francesco Simeti’s work free of charge, Gigli, gladioli, briganti ed emigrati (2013).
The work establishes a dialogue between the contradictions of early twentieth-century Sicily, combining decorative elements inspired by the Art Nouveau style, an expression of Palermo’s Belle Époque, with the serene landscapes of Francesco Lojacono and portraits of emigrant families. Simeti’s composition invites reflection on the contradictions inherent in the society of that time, as well as in contemporary society, where socio-economic inequalities, even after more than a century, seem to reappear in remarkably similar forms.
