The year 2026 marks the eighth centenary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi (1226–2026), an occasion of extraordinary historical and spiritual significance that culminates on October 4—the Saint’s liturgical feast day.
The exhibition takes its title from the book of the same name by historian Chiara Frugoni: *Quale Francesco?* (Feltrinelli, 2015). In this volume, the author offers a re-examination of Saint Francis, distinguishing the historical figure from the idealized image constructed by tradition over the centuries. Through an analysis of Franciscan iconography and a novel interpretation of the fresco cycle in the Upper Basilica of Assisi, Frugoni presents a fresh perspective on the saint’s complex identity.
The invited artists are invited to engage freely with the figure of Francis, interpreting his significance through their own expressive languages and artistic practices.
